Chapter Twelve

Bonnie flushed. “Maybe some days I feel that way. But not always. Anyway, after class I hurried out of there. I’ve been trying to lose a little weight and once I got out of the building and into the fresh air, the campus was so pretty that I decided to take a little walk.”

Miles cleared his throat. “That’s funny. We didn’t see you.”

“Pardon me?” asked Bonnie, looking alarmed.

“Myrtle and I didn’t see you taking your walk. She and I were at the school for a long time because a friend of ours had car trouble,” said Miles.

“And then there was a murder discovered,” added Myrtle.

Bonnie shifted from one foot to another. “I don’t know why I didn’t see you. Maybe it’s just that I took a walk in a different direction.”

“When were you planning on giving him the note?” asked Myrtle.

Bonnie said, “I wasn’t even sure I could give it to him or if I should give it to him. I wondered if maybe that would start things up again. I didn’t want to start any trouble with him, even all these years later.”

Miles said, “It most likely was someone in our cooking class that killed Chester, you know.”

Bonnie grew even more solemn. “I gathered that. Red came to speak to me.” She turned to Myrtle. “He was very kind to me.”

“He’d better be,” said Myrtle. “That’s how I raised him. So he’s been around trying to get more information. Did you give him any? Did you have any ideas who might have murdered Chester?”

Bonnie said quickly, “Well, I don’t have any proof, of course. Not having been there. But if I had to pick someone, I’d think his niece might have something to do with it.”

“Hattie? What makes you think so?” asked Myrtle.

“A few things. For one, she’s living beyond her means,” said Bonnie.

“She is?” Myrtle considered this. The only real impression she’d gotten of Hattie so far was that she was bored in cooking class and that she had a fondness for wearing black.

Bonnie nodded. She paused and then said in a hurry, “I was her bank teller. I don’t want to disclose any information I’m not supposed to, but I can say that Hattie has a fondness for making big purchases and eating out. With her income, there’s no way she could keep that up for very long.”

Miles said, “Was she overdrawn a lot?”

Bonnie nodded vigorously.

“You’re saying that she murdered her uncle for his money?” asked Myrtle.

“It sounds terrible to say, but I think it must be true. I know that Hattie is Chester’s only living relative. Hattie’s father, Chester’s brother, died in a car accident in Atlanta some time ago. And his parents have been dead for ages,” said Bonnie.

Apparently, even though Bonnie was terrified of Chester, she still kept up with what was going on in his life through the Bradley Bugle.

“When you were taking your walk, though, you didn’t see anything? You didn’t see Hattie go back into the building?” asked Myrtle.

“No, I didn’t see a thing.
